Mid-Week Event, Ripley Rifle Range, Ipswich

12:00 Thursday 19th August 2004
"Ripley Rifle Range" 2004 1:10,000 5m
?UBD 275 B10 36km SW of Brisbane CBD (12km along Ripley Rd from Cunningham Highway)
"Long Red" 13 controls 5km 145m climb (2.9%)

Prickles, I've had a few - it took me 20 minutes to pick them out of my gear after this event. But it's a lovely area and I enjoyed the course.

We were assured at the start that the event had been cleared with the locals but the sound of gunfire 100m away was not reassuring. Note that towards the end the course actually crosses one of the rifle ranges.

And driving away afterwards I casually picked up my cellie thinking "there won't be any cops in a remote place like this..." then put it away again after I realised the place was crawling with cops - going to and from target practice!

Thanks to the Spriggseseses for the event, Eric Andrews and QOA for the map.

Mid-Week Event, Plunkett Hills, Ipswich

UBD 304 C15 39km SSE of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 4.35km 190m climb (4.4%)

Rugged and challenging only begin to describe this. I didn't really enjoy my run. Up the stream most of the way to 1, vague at 4; map out of date - 10 years old - but not too bad.

Thans to Rod Crockart (or was it Clive Pope?) for the event, Henk Prins, Rob & Scott Simson, and QOA for the map.

Club Event, Tyamolum Scout Camp, Mt. Crosby, Ipswich

09:00 Sunday 8th August 2004
"Tyamolum Scout Camp" 2004 1:5,000 5m
UBD 175 F16 19.5km W of Brisbane CBD
"Medium Red" 3.5km 235m (advertised 205m) climb (6.7%!)

A bit of an ordeal because my gear hadn't arrived yet so I ran in shorts and road shoes, very scratchy.

Rugged and steep - 6.7% is on the high side. Went far too high and right and lost a few minutes at 6 - met ?Clive coming back down too. My 59 minutes was 21 minutes behind Tim, no young bucks present, what a shocker.

Thanks Lee Smith for the event, Jon Sutcliffe, UG and the Queensland Government for the map, the Scouts for its use.
